NN Speaker Series "The Power of One” Mandy Carter

Northampton Neighbors Speaker Series Presents
The Power of One: Importance of Allies in the Movement for Social and Racial Justice

Mandy Carter
Friday January 7, 2022
3pm-4pm on ZOOM

Join us for a lively conversation with Mandy Carter, moderated by our own Jane Fleishman. Mandy speaks from her 54 years of activism as an African-American lesbian activist with a history of fighting for social and racial justice. She highlights the importance of allies in the struggle for LGBTQ liberation and spreads a message of hope so important in our lives today. Not to be missed!

Mandy Carter was raised in two orphanages and a foster home for her first 18 years before coming out as an activist and a lesbian. She attributes the influences of the Quaker-based American Friends Service Committee, the former Institute for the Study of Nonviolence, and the pacifist-based War Resisters League for her sustained multi-racial/multi-issue intersectional organizing.

Mandy was one of five national co-chairs of Obama LGBT Pride, the historic LGBT initiative of Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. In 2012, she was inducted into the International Federation of Black Pride's Black LGBT Hall of Fame. Mandy is co-editor of We Have Not Been Moved: Resisting Racism and Militarism in 21st Century America (2012) and is one of 9 elders whose oral history is part of Jane Fleishman's award-winning book, The Stonewall Generation: LGBTQ Elders on Sex, Activism, and Aging (2020).
