In a twist on the old proverb, Bob Leverett can see both the forest and the trees. The forest expert and author will give a Zoom talk Friday, February 3, on how he co-discovered most of the known old-growth trees in Massachusetts, and will give a brief history of how awareness of this important resource has risen. He will discuss what old-growth forests are, why they should be valued, and where you can see them in Massachusetts.
Educated as an engineer, Leverett is a recognized expert in measuring trees for both science and sport. He is co-author of several books, including the Sierra Club Guide to Ancient Forests of the Northeast and the American Forests Champion Tree-Measuring Guidelines Handbook. Currently, he is working with climate scientists to measure carbon sequestration in individual trees.
He is co-founder of the Native Tree Society, co-founder and president of Friends of Mohawk Trail State Forest, and chair of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Forest Reserves Science Advisory Committee.
